What is A Promotion Letter?
A promotion letter is an HR document issued to an employee for promoting him/her to a higher position inside the organization. It is a legal document and can be presented in the court of law in case of a dispute.

Types of Promotion
There are three types of promotion: Vertical, Horizontal and Dry.
As the name suggests, vertical promotion is when you promote an employee to a higher designation with additional responsibilities and higher pay.
For example, promoting a Junior Accountant to Senior Accountant with an increase in responsibilities, designation, and pay.
Horizontal Promotion means to promote an employee within a similar category. An employee stays in the same department but is given a different scope of tasks.
For example, promoting a bank employee shifted to another profile with similar pay or a minor change in pay. Usually, this takes place when someone leaves and staff in the required department is more than required.
Dry Promotion is totally different from both of the above. It doesn’t involve a change in salary structure but an increase in responsibilities. A level of authority is to the employee regardless of his/her salary.
This kind of promotion takes place during economic downturns, cost-cutting or layoffs.
