What Is LCM?

LCM stands for Least Common Multiple. The LCM is the smallest positive integer which is divisible by both the given numbers.

How To Find LCM?

LCM can be found in 2 ways:

  1. By Finding Multiples.
  2. By Division Method.

LCM By Finding Multiples

In this method, you need to first find the multiples of each number. Identify the smallest common one among the set.

For this method, your multiplication tables must be thorough. To practice and learn multiplication tables you can use our ready-to-use Multiplication Tables 1-30 Excel Template.

Example: LCM of 4 and 8

Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40…

Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80…

The multiples that are found in both are 8, 16, 24, 32, and 40. The lowest among them is 8. Hence, 8 is the LCM of 4 and 8.

LCM by Division Method

In this method, you need to divide the numbers by the lowest divisible number. Then take common out of both multiples.

Example: LCM of 12 and 40

12 = 2 x 2 x 3

40 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5

2 is common 2 times. The third 2 is not common. Similarly, 3 and 5 also are not common.

Taking each individual number from the commons that are 2 X 2 and then multiplying the rest which is 3 from the number 12 and 2 and 5 from the number 40.

In short, the common from the 2 sets are taken only once and others. Multiplying all of them gives the LCM.

Hence, LCM = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 = 120.
