How To Use: TODAY Function

TODAY function displays the current date of the system. This function refreshes the date whenever the worksheet recalculates.

The TODAY function is useful when you need to have the current date displayed on a worksheet, regardless of when you open the workbook.

You can calculate the intervals using this function. This function is a volatile function and must be used with caution.

It recalculates whenever the workbook is opened or whenever a calculation takes place in the worksheet. The value of TODAY keeps on changing based on the current date.

You can use the shortcut key “Ctrl + ;” to insert the today’s date in a cell.

Syntax for TODAY Function

=TODAY()

The TODAY function does not take any input arguments. It is used with empty parenthesis.

The TODAY function is an inbuilt function in Excel. It falls under the categorized of Date/Time Functions.

As a worksheet function, you can enter the TODAY function as part of a formula in a cell of a worksheet.

If the TODAY function does not update the date when you expect it to, you might need to change the settings that control when the workbook or worksheet recalculates.

On the File tab, click Options, and then in the Formulas category under Calculation options, make sure that Automatic is selected.

Errors

There are no as such #NUM! or #VALUE! errors in this function. But If your system date is wrong then it will display the wrong system date. Based on the wrong date your calculation may have wrong results.
