TRUNC Function returns a number truncated to a specified number of digits. It truncates a number to an integer by removing the fractional part of the number.

In other words, TRUNC Function truncates a supplied number to a specified number of decimal places.

The TRUNC function is an inbuilt function in Excel and it is categorized as a Math/Trig Function. You can also enter the TRUNC function as part of a formula in a cell of a worksheet.

Syntax for TRUNC Function

=TRUNC(number, [num_digits])

Arguments

Number – This argument is required. The number you want to truncate.

Num_digits – This argument is optional. A number specifying the precision of the truncation. The default value for num_digits is 0 (zero).

A positive [num_digits] value specifies the number of digits to the right of the decimal point.

If [num_digits] is 0 (or is omitted), the supplied number is truncated to the nearest integer.

A negative [num_digits] value specifies the number of digits to the left of the decimal point.

I have created the infographics for the TRUNC Function. With the help of these infographics, you can easily learn step by step process for using this excel functions.

Furthermore, Excel consists of many inbuilt functions which are helpful in the analytical and statistical study of number.

Simply follow the instructions in the infographics below:

TRUNC and INT are similar in that both return integers.

TRUNC removes the fractional part of the number. INT rounds numbers down to the nearest integer based on the value of the fractional part of the number.

INT and TRUNC are different only when using negative numbers: TRUNC(-4.3) returns -4, but INT(-4.3) returns -5 because -5 is the lower number.
