How to Use: COUNTA Function

COUNTA function counts the number of non-empty cells in a selected range. It will count cells that have numbers and/or any other characters in them.

This function counts cells containing any type of data in a cell, including error values and empty text (“”). For example, if the range contains a formula that returns an empty string, the COUNTA function counts that value. The COUNTA function does not count empty cells.

In other words, if you want to count only cells that contain numbers, you can use the COUNT function.

If you want to count only cells that meet certain criteria, use the COUNTIF function or the COUNTIFS function.

Syntax for COUNTA Function

=COUNTA(Range of Cell)

Let us use COUNTA function with an example.

Write down numbers from 1 to 10 in your spreadsheet. then put a text in between deleting any one number and use COUNTA function selecting the whole range.

The count is 10 even though one of the cells contains text. But in C.OUNT function it will show 9 as only the COUNT function does not include the cells with text.

Formula applied here is =COUNTA(A1:A1O)

Thus, the only cells that the COUNTA function does not count are absolutely empty cells.
